Dentures Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are an oral appliance that replaces missing teeth. Depending on the type of dentures you get, they can replace some or all of the teeth in your smile and can be either fixed or removable. They’re custom-built and fitted to your mouth to ensure a good fit and comfort as they restore your oral function.

Most dentures have an acrylic base that’s colored to match your gums and serves as the foundation for a set of artificial teeth. The artificial teeth are typically made from porcelain or composite resin, which have a very similar appearance to tooth enamel, making your dentures look just like your natural teeth.

Dentures have come a long way in recent years, with numerous technological improvements making them far more comfortable and natural-looking than they used to be.

Why should I get dentures?

Dentures provide a variety of benefits, including:

  • Improved speech
  • Enhanced ability to chew your food
  • Restored facial appearance

By giving you back your smile, dentures significantly enhance your day-to-day activities and can help restore your confidence and boost your self-esteem.

Are there different types of dentures?

There are a few types of dentures, each of which addresses different needs and preferences. Varieties of dentures offered by Dr. Rochefort and his team include:

Traditional full dentures

Traditional full dentures replace all of the teeth in one or both of your arches. If you still have teeth in your smile, you’ll need to have them extracted to make room for the denture. Traditional full dentures fit over your gums and typically adhere to your mouth with either a suction or adhesive mechanism.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures secure to your mouth with dental implants. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that your provider surgically places in your jawbone. The implants fuse with your bone tissue as you heal from surgery, ultimately creating a very strong and stable foundation for your dentures to attach.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures replace multiple teeth in your mouth when you still have healthy natural teeth that you want to keep. There are a few different mechanisms used to secure partial dentures, such as metal clasps or a base that has holes to accommodate your natural teeth. Partial dentures allow your artificial and natural teeth to work side by side.
